Recollections, 1861-1865.

This collection contains the two-volume Civil War recollections of Catherine Mary Powell (Noland) Cochran of Middleburg, Loudoun County, Va., and Richmond, Va. This undated memoir offers descriptions of life in Loudoun County under Union occupation, the exploits of Col. John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916), and the economic impact of the war. Also in the recollections are descriptions of the battles of 1st and 2nd Bull Run, the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, and the Petersburg Campaign. Other items include miscellaneous newspaper clippings, military passes, and orders, 1863-1865, regarding John Henry Cochran's (d. 1896) service in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.

John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916) of Powhatan County, Va., was a lawyer and Confederate officer. Mosby was educated at the University of Virginia and worked as a lawyer in Washington County, Va., prior to the Civil War. In 1861, Mosby enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry.
